Teaching Digital Natives: Strategies for Digital Immigrants

Date has Passed

Date: May 15, 2008

Time: 09:00 AM - 04:00 PM

Location:Murray Hall - Room 117

Led By : Rebecca Anzalone, NITLE instructional technologist

Description: Today’s first-year students arrive on campus as digital natives with high expectations about technology. For "digital immigrant" faculty and staff, learning how to use new technologies in order to keep up with rising expectations may seem to demand too much time. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to raise their concerns about the appropriate place of technology in academic life and learn about successful experiences that digital immigrants like themselves have had in using technology to enhance their teaching or scholarship. The workshop will help participants find and use appropriate technology tools for information management, communications, organization, and productivity. Finally, participants will have a chance to develop strategies for effectively managing time, student expectations, and technology. This workshop is open to participants from Allegheny and NITLE Member colleges. There is a registration deadline of April 4, 2008 for this workshop.

Visual Literacy: Tools for Teaching and Learning with Images

Date has Passed

Date: May 16, 2008

Time: 09:00 AM - 04:00 PM

Location:Murray Hall - Room 117

Led By : Jennifer Sader, NITLE Professional Development Coordinator

Description: In our media-saturated culture, communication occurs just as much through images as through text. Data visualizations and graphics enhance our understanding of complex information as they draw upon our native ability to translate visual patterns and cues. A vast array of digital images, maps, and graphing options are available on the World Wide Web today, but arbitrary instructional use of images can confuse learners and reduce their understanding of subject content. This workshop provides an interdisciplinary survey of visual resources for education with a focus on open-access solutions for teaching. Participants will learn how to acquire and manage digital images and graphics with tools such as Flickr and ARTstor, and will consider related issues such as the visual learning style and copyright. Each participant will leave with a rich set of visual resources, new technology skills, and peer support within the NITLE network. This workshop is open to participants from Allegheny and NITLE Member colleges. There is a registration deadline of April 4, 2008 for this workshop.
