To access your account from your personal computer you need an internet connection and an FTP (File Transfer Protocal) program. We currently recommend Core FTP Lite for Windows users. Some users may still be using the program AceFTP to access their Allegheny account. For those users we provide the instructions below.
When connecting to your account, use the chart below to determine the proper Host or Server name.
| Host or Server | |
| Students | hercules.allegheny.edu |
| Employees* | gator2.allegheny.edu |
*Some employees should use gator4.allegheny.edu instead of gator2.allegheny.edu. Those employees who need to use gator4.allegheny.edu have been notified.
Start AceFTP. This can be done by clicking Start > Programs >AceFTP Freeware > AceFTP Freeware. To set up a site to connect to your account, click File > Connect.
The AceFTP Site Profiles window will open. Click New Site Profile in the right pane.
Enter a name for the new site you are creating. This name can be anything you like. Use the chart above to determine the proper entry for Server. Enter your username in the User ID box and your email/ftp password in the Password box. Click the Save Password box if you wish to connect without having to type your password each time. Click Next.
In the next window, click the folder icon next to the Enter local folder: box and browse to your My Documents folder.Click OK, and then click Finish.
To connect to your account, double-click on the name of the site you just created in the Site Profiles window.
Files and folders in your My Documents folder on your computer will display in the bottom left pane of the AceFTP window. Files and folders in your account will display in the bottom right pane. You can copy files and folders from your computer to your account by selecting the files or folders in the bottom left pane and clicking the right-pointing arrow between the two bottom panes.
You can browse files and folders in your account by double-clicking a folder to see what is in that folder. To move back out of the folder, click the Up One Level icon above the network account pane.
To delete a folder in your account, click on the folder in the network account pane, and click the red X (delete) icon to the right of the network account listing.
You will see a warning that this folder and all of its contents will be deleted. Click Yes if you want to delete the folder and all files in it.
To disconnect from your account, click File > Disconnect.
In the Confirm window, click Yes.
