WebCT Quizzes and Pop-Up Blocking:

Computing Services recommends that you check your browser settings before starting any quiz to make sure the settings are configured properly to run WebCT.

If your professor makes a sample quiz available to you please take the quiz to make sure that you are comfortable taking a quiz online and that your computer is configured properly to take the quiz on time and without difficulty.

Quiz Window Loads in a Pop-up Window Behind the Active Window:

If you have been working online for a while you might have multiple windows open behind the active browser window. Check to see if the quiz loaded to an inactive window by selecting the inactive browser buttons from the status bar at the bottom of the page.

If there are no “hidden” windows, you might have a pop – up blocker of some sort running.

WebCT Quizzes Use Pop – up Windows:

Many browsers now come with pop – up window blockers to help cut down on annoying pop - up ads. If you are running a pop - up blocker you will need to either turn off the pop – up blocking feature in the browser, google tool bar, pop – up blocking software, etc. or better yet set up an exception so that webct.allegheny.edu can use pop - up windows. .

Browsers

Below are directions for quickly allowing pop - up windows in the more common browsers. Please refer to your browser's help file for more detailed directions.

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox notifies its users that it is blocking pop ups at the top and the bottom of the page generating the pop - up window. Mozilla Firefox is not currently a Browser Supported by WebCT Campus Edition 4.0.

If you click on either of these alert messages you will have the following options. It is recommended that you select the first option.

Additional information about FireFox web feature options is available on the Mozilla FireFox web site.

Safari

Mac users are able to turn their Pop-Up blocking feature on and off from the Safari menu.

Netscape

Newer versions of Netscape (versions 7.1 and newer) will display an icon in the lower right hand corner of the browser window when blocking pop-up windows.

If you click on this icon you can allow pop - up windows generated by the webct.allegheny.edu.

If webct.allegheny.edu does not automatically load you will need to type it and click add.

A more details discription of Changing Netscape Preferences to take a WebCT Quiz is available from the Allegheny College WebCT Tutorials page.
