WebCT 4.0 supports Drag and Drop file management using the WebDAV protocol. Drag and Drop file manangement is available for WebCT designers (instructors) only. It is not available for students. This tutorial describes how to use Drag and Drop WebCT file management from a Windows 2000 or a Mac OS X computer. For help using Drag and Drop from another operating system, please contact your instructional technologist.
Before you can use Drag and Drop WebCT file management you will need to know the WebDAV location of your WebCT course files. This information is found by logging into WebCT and clicking the WebDAV Info button on your myWebCT page.

The WebDAV info page lists the WebDAV address of the course files and course backups for each course in which you have Designer status. To set up Drag and Drop access to one of these folders, copy the full address from the WebDAV page (including http://) and follow the instructions below for either Windows 2000 or Mac OS X.

To use Drag and Drop file management in a WebCT course you need to add a Network Place to My Network Places, which will point to the WebCT course files folder. You will only need to do this once for each WebCT course.
Begin by double-clicking My Network Places on the desktop and then double-click Add Network Place.

In the Add Network Place Wizard, enter the full address to the WebCT course files folder copied from the WebCT WebDAV Info page. Be sure to include the http:// . If you used copy and paste to enter this address, check for trailing spaces that may have been accidentally copied; delete any, if found. Click Next.

In the Enter Network Password window, enter your WebCT username and password. Leave Save this password in your password list checked, if desired, or uncheck if you prefer to enter your password each time you access the course files folder. Click OK.

In the final Network Place Wizard dialog, enter a name for this Network Place. This can be any name you like, and should be something that will identify this Network Place as your course files location for this particular WebCT course. You may want to consider including the semester and year in the name you choose.

If prompted, enter your WebCT username and password again. Your course files folder for this WebCT course will open.

Repeat this procedure to set up a Network Place for each WebCT course. Once you have set up a network place for each course, you will be able open your WebCT course files by double-clicking My Network Places on the desktop and then double-clicking the folder representing your WebCT course files.

See our tips on using your WebCT course files folder below.
From the Finder menu click Go > Connect to Server...

In the Address box of the Connect to Server window, enter the full address to the course files folder copied from the WebCT WebDAV Info page. Be sure to include the http:// . If you used copy and paste to enter this address, check for trailing spaces that may have been accidentally copied; delete any, if found. Click Connect.

Click Continue at the WebDAV File System Security Notice.

In the WebDAV File System Authentication window, enter your WebCT username and password. Click OK.

This should mount a disk on your desktop which contains your WebCT course files. Repeat this procedure to mount a disk for each WebCT course. Double-click the desktop icon

to see your WebCT course files folder in the Finder.

For quick access to your WebCT course files in the future, drag the mounted disk icon from the desktop to your Finder toolbar.

When you want to connect to this folder, click the icon on the toolbar (which will be a ? when the disk is not mounted) and enter your WebCT username and password when prompted.

Alternately, the WebCT folder may be listed in the Finder menu under Go > Recent Folders, in which case you can select the folder and enter your WebCT username and password when prompted, to quickly connect.
When you have completed the set up, you can drag files and folders from a folder on your hard disk to the WebCT folder to transfer files to your WebCT course files folder.

For editing files already in your course files folder, we recommend that you drag a copy of the file to your local computer, make your edits, save the file, and then drag a copy back to your WebCT folder. Opening a file directly from the WebCT folder may not work as expected, depending on the file type.
